Industry trends have had IT Services companies pushing their clients towards managed service contracts. We have watched this and asked, why? Our opinion on maintenance contracts hasn’t changed over the ten years we have been in business. One side or the other, the client or the service provider is getting a bad deal. For the service provider to make money, the contact must be “padded” so that their costs are covered and they make a profit. If the contract is written too tight or the client is a heavy services user, though, the service provider will lose money. If the service provider loses too much money, then they will go out of business and the client will be out looking for another service provider. In reality, what we have noticed is that most of the maintenance contracts are written with little actual maintenance in them and are designed more to create a reliable revenue stream from which the service provider can build their business. This benefits the service company solely and does little for their clients.
At Orbis Solutions, we have built our business over the last ten years, having never written a maintenance contract or charged for any service not provided. All of our work is done à la carte, on a time and materials basis. Does this mean we don’t do proactive regular maintenance? Of course not. With Orbis Solutions, though, you only get charged for what we do. We work with you to come up with a maintenance schedule and a list of services to be rendered from our Best Practices. This of course, is in addition to special projects, moves, adds and changes, and ongoing support, which are typically not included in any service contract by our competition. If you want to pay a large monthly fee to receive a stack of reports that took the provider ten minutes to run via a script they have written, please look somewhere else. Our value proposition is to offer our clients customized service on a pay-as-you-go basis with no maintenance contracts, unnecessary fees or long term commitments.
